Mixed Livestock Farmer Responsibilities

The successful candidate will oversee the daily care, health, feeding, handling, and welfare of a wide range of livestock. Animals include sheep, goats, cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, llamas, alpacas, donkeys, horses, ostriches, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals.

Responsibilities include animal health checks, parasite control, vaccinations, hoof trimming, fly strike management, nutrition, water supply, shelter, grazing rotations, and livestock movements.

The role also includes maintaining animal enclosures, cleaning troughs, preparing the farm each morning, operating farm equipment, and ensuring visitor areas remain safe and well presented.

Customer Service and Leadership

This is a customer-facing leadership position. The successful applicant will interact with children, families, school groups, tourists, volunteers, and other visitors.

Duties include assisting with tractor rides, farm tours, nursery shed activities, school visits, birthday parties, group bookings, and reception during busy periods. The role also involves supporting and leading volunteers.

Requirements

Applicants should have experience working with or managing mixed livestock farms. Experience with equine, sheep, cattle, or camelids is preferred.

Strong animal husbandry knowledge, leadership skills, communication abilities, and problem-solving skills are essential. An agriculture, animal science, or farm management qualification is preferred, though extensive practical experience is also valued.

Applicants must hold a full NZ or equivalent driver’s licence and have New Zealand citizenship, residency, or a valid work visa. Availability from Wednesday to Sunday is required.
